The Dog Collective Co. dog grooming course can help you fulfil your dream and train you in everything “dog groomer”. Delivered in small groups for personalised attention and hands-on learning, our course is designed to give students the confidence and practical skills needed to succeed in the industry. Having trained many successful dog groomers in the past, it’s a delight seeing them now running their own successful dog grooming businesses or working within the industry.

Learning to become a professional dog groomer at Dog Collective Co. Grooming Academy:

Work with real dogs from the very beginning:

At Dog Collective Co. Grooming Academy we know that the only way to truly learn how to become a dog groomer is to train on real dogs. Unlike the majority of dog grooming courses available, you will be hands-on with real-life K9's from day one of your grooming course. No book or video can prepare you for what it's really like to physically handle, bathe and groom a dog, hands-on experience is the only way to go! Don't worry, your trainer will be with you every step of the way so you'll never be on your own. All dogs used throughout your dog grooming course will be organised for you too.

What will you learn?

During this dog grooming course you will learn the essentials of what it takes to be a professional dog groomer, call it 'Dog Grooming 101'. Like anything in life, you will never stop learning, but you will definitely have the essential skills and knowledge to go out there and proudly announce "I'm a professional dog groomer!".

As there are a multitude of different breeds and style cuts, it's impossible to learn every one of them, however, you will learn how to do full basic dog clips on a variety of common breeds, from this you will have the skills and knowledge to start working as a dog groomer as well as the foundations from which you can grow.

Some of the other things you will learn are as follows:

• How to correctly bath and blow dry a dog

• Different style clips e.g. Schnauzers, West Highland Terriers, Poodles ...

• How to shave, trim and clip a dog

• Scissoring a dog's face, feet, tail, skirting, trousers and more

• Dealing with knotted and matted coats

• How to brush and maintain a dog's coat

• How to clip a dog's nails

• Grooming and dealing with puppies

• Cleaning and plucking dog's ears

• Trimming dog's paw pads

• How to groom and tidy a dog's head and face

• Clipping around a dog's eyes

• How to do a sanitary clip (bottom etc.)

• De-shedding and thinning a dog's coat

• How to brush a dog's teeth

• Checking in a dog for its groom

• Different blade lengths and how to choose which to use

• Dealing with difficult dogs

Entry Requirements for Professional Dog Grooming Course:

As this is a beginner-friendly course, no previous qualifications or experience are required. Whether you’re looking for a career change, returning to the workforce, or simply following a passion for dogs, this course is designed to teach you the skills needed to become a professional dog groomer.

Want to Start Your Own Dog Grooming Business?

The Business Success Add-On is completely optional and is designed for students who would like guidance on starting and growing their own dog grooming business. It is not required to complete the Professional Dog Groomer Course.

Many students complete the Professional Dog Groomer Course with the goal of gaining employment within the industry. Others dream of running their own grooming salon, mobile grooming business or home-based grooming business. For those students, we offer our optional Business Success Add-On following completion of the Professional Dog Groomer Course.

This additional 2-day program is designed to help students confidently transition from learning how to groom dogs to running a successful business. Whether your goal is to operate a mobile grooming service, open a salon, establish a home-based grooming business, or simply gain a deeper understanding of how the industry operates, this program provides practical guidance and real-world knowledge.

Topics covered include the day-to-day running of a dog grooming business, pricing, booking systems, marketing, branding, sourcing products and equipment, client communication, customer service, cleaning and maintenance of equipment, and much more.

Students also receive 12 months of phone and email mentoring and support, helping them navigate the challenges of starting and growing a dog grooming business with confidence.

No previous qualifications or experience are required to enrol in the Business Success Add-On. This beginner-friendly program is designed for students who are completely new to business and want guidance on setting up and growing their own dog grooming business.

Please note that the Business Success Add-On is a classroom-based program and does not involve any practical dog grooming. These two days are dedicated entirely to the business side of the industry, allowing students to focus on planning, setting up and growing a successful dog grooming business.

As part of the program, students may work on activities such as business planning, pricing, branding, marketing, website development, social media setup, booking systems and other business-related tasks. For this reason, students are required to bring a laptop computer. An iPad or tablet is not recommended, as some software and website-building platforms do not function as effectively on these devices.

A basic understanding of how to use a computer and browse the internet will be beneficial, as many of the activities involve working online.

Location:

Training takes place at the Dog Collective Co. private grooming studio in Southport on the Gold Coast, Queensland.

Professional Dog Grooming Course Information

PROFESSIONAL DOG GROOMER COURSE:

Our Professional Dog Groomer Course focuses on developing the practical skills required to become a professional dog groomer through hands-on training with a wide variety of dogs.

Course Duration:
10 days over a 3-week period

Schedule:
Weeks 1 & 2: Monday to Thursday
Week 3: Monday & Tuesday

9:15am – 3:00pm daily

BUSINESS SUCCESS ADD-ON:

For students who wish to start their own dog grooming business, our Business Success Add-On provides additional business education and ongoing support.

What time does the course start and finish each day?

The Professional Dog Groomer Course commences at 9:15am and concludes at 3:00pm each day.

What do I need to complete the course?

Aside from a love of dogs and excitement about beginning your new career, all tools and equipment required to complete your practical training at Dog Collective Co. Grooming Academy are supplied.

We do recommend purchasing your own grooming scissors prior to commencement. Once enrolled, you will receive a link to our recommended scissors and suppliers.

Students enrolling in the optional Business Success Add-On will also require a laptop computer, as much of the business training involves online activities such as website development, social media setup, booking systems and business planning. An iPad or tablet is not recommended.

What will I receive?

• A Dog Collective Co. Professional Dog Grooming Course Workbook, yours to keep and refer back to throughout your grooming career.

• Hands-on practical training working with real dogs throughout the course.

• A Certificate of Completion from Dog Collective Co. Grooming Academy.

• Students who enrol in the optional Business Success Add-On will also receive 12 months of phone and email mentoring and support to assist them with building and growing their dog grooming business.

• Past students have the option to book one-on-one mentoring or consulting sessions with their trainer. These sessions can take place at the Dog Collective Co. training studio or at a location of your choosing, such as your own grooming salon.

(Additional fees apply for in-person mentoring and consulting. Current rate: $150 per hour including GST for past students. Minimum booking of 2 hours. Travel charges may apply.)

What qualification will I receive?

Upon successful completion of the Professional Dog Groomer Course, you will receive a Certificate of Completion from Dog Collective Co. Grooming Academy.

12 Months of Mentoring & Support – Students who enrol in the Business Success Add-On receive 12 months of phone and email mentoring to help guide them through the early stages of building and growing their dog grooming business.

This combination of extensive practical training, real-world industry experience and optional business support helps our graduates enter the industry with confidence.
